The Universal Soldier: Locking Traction for the Legendary Dana 44.

The Dana 44 is arguably the most common axle in 4x4 history, found under everything from the rear of a modern Jeep JK to the front of a classic Ford Bronco or Chevy K10. While these axles are strong, they often come with open differentials that leave you stranded with one wheel spinning. The ARB RD117 is the definitive upgrade, transforming this workhorse axle into a true locking differential.

At Overland Truck Store, we sell more RD117s than almost any other locker because of its incredible versatility. It fits the Rear Axle of non-Rubicon Jeep Wranglers (JK, TJ) and Isuzu Rodeos, as well as the Front Axle of classic Ford, Dodge, and Chevy trucks.

Whether you are building a vintage restoration or upgrading your daily driver JK for the trail, this locker delivers the best of both worlds. On the street, it remains fully open for polite cornering and zero tire scrub. On the rocks, a flip of the switch locks the 30-spline shafts together, ensuring both wheels turn at the same speed for maximum traction.

  • Axle Type: Standard Dana 44.

  • Spline Count: 30 Spline.

  • Carrier Break: Designed for Gear Ratios 3.92 and Numerically Higher (e.g., 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13).

Installer Note:

  • Gear Ratio Check: This locker (RD117) is designed for the "Low Speed" carrier break (3.92 and Up). If you are running stock gears like 3.55 or 3.73 in an older truck, this locker will likely not fit (you would need the RD116).

  • Jeep JK Exception: For Jeep Wrangler JK owners, this unit is the standard rear locker for non-Rubicon models (Sahara/Sport) when upgrading to aftermarket gears (4.10, 4.56, etc.). If you are keeping stock 3.21/3.73 gears, verify fitment, as you may need "Thick" gears to utilize this carrier.
